Dream City Made of Wood: A Visit to Drvegrad

Hello takealookers!

This week we continue our tour de Serbia, my homeland, we're going into one special person's dream city, but more on that in a bit. First, let's talk 1980s movie, Field of Dreams, staring Kevin Costner, I don't know if you're familiar with it, but I will always remember it for the following quote - if you build it, they will come. I'm not gonna spoil the movie for you, but in short the quote is taken to mean if you build something that's even unimaginable you will certainly find kindred spirits who will appreciate it. Likewise, world class movie director Emir Kusturica build his dream city, Drvengrad (Wooden City), in 2005, in Morka Gora, a small village on the northern slopes of mountain Zlatibor, Serbia. And let me tell you, his dream city is amazing! If you haven't heard of Mr. Kusturica, shame on you, go do your homework and watch, at least, the movie Black Cat, White Cat

Drvengrad is located on a hill and it's literally made out of wood. The view from Drvegrad is stunning, you overlook the green hills and fluffy clouds are your neighbours. The little streets of Drvengrad are full of character with each carrying a name of a famous actor, writer, or an artist, funky graffiti and brightly colored little cottages. There's also a lovely little market where you can buy local products such as jams, honey and of course rakija.  Drvengrad also features a wonderful resort Mećavnik, several amazing restaurants, a wellness center and naturally a cinema! And if that's not enough, there's a Film and Music festival Kustendorf taking place here, every January. Oh, and I have I mentioned Jonny Depp and Monica Bellucci visited Drvengrad. What? You're not sold on this, yet? Fine! Let's talk food then! :)

Now, you know I'm a bit of a foodie, I definitely learn a lot about the country and the people from the food they serve. What I learnt about Mr. Kusturica  is that he must be as amazing of a human as the food his restaurant served us. I was seriously impressed to discover that in the restaurant local products are served. Homemade, organic prosciutto, as well as cheese, kajmak and bread. Besides, Mr. Kusturica has his own brand of organic raspberry and blackberry juices that are to die for. I definitely recommend trying some of the grill dishes such as  chicken skewer or grilled trout. The food is seriously amazing!

I had  fantastic time in Drvegrad and I love to come back here from time to time. This is an ideal location for a weekend trip. You can rent out one of the amazing little cottages, admire the stunning view, enjoy some spa time, a good movie and indulge in some truly delicious food, and quite possibly you might run into Mr. Depp around the corner, who knows, maybe your dreams come true as well, or were those mine. :) Also, taking a fun little time travel ride on an old train line, Å argan 8, from Morka Gora to to Å argan Vitasi is a cool thing to do when in the area. Sadly, as I haven't booked the ticket on time, I had to take a rain check on this one, but people say the ride is a blast.

Anyway, takealookers, thank you for reading this, share it with your friends if you liked it.

Next week we move from one dreamy location to the next.

Have a good one!
